Just 15 minutes north up the Lake Huron coastline from Sauble Beach, you’ll find the village of Oliphant. With shallow, sheltered waters from the nearby Fishing Islands, Oliphant is a mecca for kiteboarders and kayakers alike. The same stunning sunsets as Sauble Beach can be enjoyed in this quiet counterpart.
The Oliphant Fishing Islands are located off the western shores of the Bruce Peninsula on the Lake Huron side and boast crystal clear waters and spectacular vistas. The waters here are dotted with approximately 70 dolomite islands that stretch from Oliphant to Red Bay to Howdenvale. This challenging but beautiful waterscape can be explored by boat, by kayak or canoe. If choosing to go by boat, consider a tour with Boat the Bruce, where local Captain Colton knows the area inside and out. Head down to the Government Dock for a swim and to watch the boats coming and going to the islands.
Described by kiteboarders as Carribean-esque, the calm, shallow and sheltered waters of Oliphant are legendary among Ontario riders. Stop by on a windy day and watch the kites or book a lesson to learn the sport safely. The same waters are great for kayakers wanting to explore the fishing islands.
