Hey, fellow explorer! Get ready to paddle through some of the coolest spots in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula. We’re talking about Lake Huron, the Sauble River and our inland lakes. Whether you’re looking for a sunset SUP or a river adventure, we’ve got ideas for you.
Lake Huron: Open Waters and Island Views
The Lake Huron shoreline from Sauble Beach to Oliphant, Red Bay and Howdenvale offers some great opportunities for paddlers. The weather can change quickly, so check the forecast before heading out. On a calm day, Lake Huron can offer some excellent stand up paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing. In the Oliphant area, you will find the Fishing Islands and plenty of sheltered and shallow water to explore. Outer Vision Adventure Tours offers guided tours of the Oliphant Fishing Islands as well as rentals and advice for those wanting to do a self-guided trip.
Sauble River – Calm Waters and Interesting Sights
Heading up stream from Lake Huron, you can paddle the Sauble River to the base of Sauble Falls. Canoes, kayaks and stand up paddleboards are included with your stay at the KitWat Motel and Marina. The Sauble River Marina also offers rentals of canoes, kayaks, sups and paddleboats. The Sauble River can also be paddled above the falls around big bending turns and towering sand dunes. Canoe rentals are available on the north side of the falls in Sauble Falls Provincial Park from Outer Vision Adventure Tours. Speak to park staff and Outer Vision Adventures staff about conditions and trip ideas before heading out.
Inland Lakes – Quietly Natural South Bruce Peninsula is home to several inland lakes that can provide paddling opportunities. Sky Lake, Isaac Lake and Boat Lake in the Oliphant area are all connected by the Rankin River. Boat Lake is located at the South end of Spry Lake but is a much larger lake than can get rough with wind. Check the forecast before heading out. The Rankin River south of Boat Lake is not passable due to downed trees and obstacles. Outer Vision Adventure Tours offers full and half day guided tours of the Rankin River as it connects the various lakes. Berford Lake north of Wiarton is another nice fishing and paddling option.
